Instruments we teach

Piano

The piano is a versatile keyboard instrument that produces sound by striking strings with hammers when keys are pressed. Known for its wide range of notes (typically 88 keys) and dynamic expression, it is used in various genres, from classical and jazz to pop and rock. The piano serves as both a solo and accompanying instrument, capable of creating rich harmonies and melodies. Its ability to convey emotion and complexity makes it a cornerstone of music composition, performance, and education.

Keyboard

A keyboard is an electronic musical instrument with a set of piano-style keys that produce sound through synthesized or sampled tones. It is highly versatile, capable of mimicking a wide range of instruments, from pianos and organs to strings and drums. Keyboards are used in various genres, including pop, rock, jazz, and electronic music, and often feature built-in rhythms and recording capabilities. Compact and portable, they are popular for both live performances and studio production.

Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar is a stringed instrument that produces sound naturally through the vibration of its strings, amplified by its hollow wooden body. Known for its warm, resonant tones, it is widely used in genres like folk, country, rock, and classical music. Played with fingers or a pick, the acoustic guitar is versatile, portable, and ideal for both solo performances and accompaniment. Its simplicity and rich sound make it a favorite among beginners and professional musicians alike.

Electric Guitar

The electric guitar is a versatile stringed instrument widely used in genres like rock, blues, jazz, and metal. Unlike acoustic guitars, it relies on pickups to convert string vibrations into electrical signals, which are then amplified. Known for its sleek design and ability to produce a wide range of tones, the electric guitar is played with fingers or a pick and often enhanced with effects like distortion, reverb, or delay. Its expressive sound and adaptability make it a centerpiece in music.

Theory

Music theory is the study of the principles and practices that govern music, including elements like melody, harmony, rhythm, scales, chords, and notation. It provides a framework for understanding how music is constructed, analyzed, and performed. By learning music theory, musicians can improve their composition, improvisation, and communication skills, enabling them to create and interpret music more effectively. It is essential for anyone looking to deepen their musical knowledge.

Drums

Drums are percussion instruments that produce sound when struck with hands, sticks, or mallets. They form the rhythmic foundation of music, providing tempo, groove, and energy in genres like rock, jazz, pop, and more. A standard drum kit includes components like the snare drum, bass drum, toms, cymbals, and hi-hat, allowing drummers to create diverse rhythms and textures. Essential to any band, drums drive the beat and add dynamic intensity to musical performances.

Vocal/Singing

A vocalist is a singer who uses their voice as their primary instrument to perform music. Vocalists can specialize in various genres, such as pop, rock, classical, jazz, or opera, and they often convey emotion and storytelling through their singing. They may perform solo, as part of a band, or in choirs, using techniques like breath control, pitch accuracy, and vocal dynamics to enhance their performance. A skilled vocalist can captivate audiences, making them a central figure in music.

Bass Guitar

The bass guitar is a stringed instrument vital to modern music, providing low-end foundation and rhythmic groove in genres like rock, jazz, funk, and pop. Typically with 4 strings (tuned E, A, D, G), it’s played by plucking or slapping with fingers or a pick. Working closely with drums, its deep, resonant sound adds depth and energy, making it essential to any band.

Music Production

Music production is the process of creating, recording, editing, and refining music. It involves arranging compositions, recording instruments or vocals, and using software (DAWs) and tools to mix, master, and enhance tracks. Producers oversee the creative and technical aspects, shaping the final sound. Essential in genres like pop, electronic, and hip-hop, music production blends artistry and technology to bring musical ideas to life.

Ukulele

The ukulele is a small, four-stringed instrument with a bright, cheerful sound, originating from Hawaii. It comes in four main sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone, each offering slightly different tones and ranges. Known for its simplicity and portability, the ukulele is popular among beginners and seasoned musicians alike. It’s often used in folk, pop, and Hawaiian music, and its nylon strings make it easy to play. Its compact size and sound make it a favorite for casual playing.
